AGRA:
One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the majestic Taj Mahal, is located in Agra. Delhi is only a couple hours’ drive away from Agra. This region of India has a rich history dating back to 1000 B.C. The Greek philosopher Ptolemy named the city “Agra” around 200 A.D.
In the sixteenth century, this city served as the Mughal Empire’s capital. This era is when many of the city’s well-known heritage sites, like the beautiful Taj Mahal, were built. Ancient structures coexist peacefully alongside contemporary stores and homes in Agra’s streets, carrying the creative legacy of the Mughal Empire into the present era. The city has enough to be grateful for, from its exquisite marble artwork to its charming candy stores.
It is thought to have been constructed in 1475. The epic Mahabharatha also mentions Agra, referring to it as Agraban, which means “paradise.” This location was also identified as Agra by the eminent geographer Ptolemy on his global map. The capital of both the Lodi and Mughal kingdoms, Agra was founded in the sixteenth century by Sikandar Lodi of the Lodi Dynasty.
Not only are these magnificent displays of art and culture in this historic city, but they also serve as windows into the artistic prowess of the Indian populace in bygone eras. Numerous historic sites, mausoleums, forts, mosques, tombs, and temples from antiquity may be found throughout the city.
Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are two more UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Agra, in addition to the Taj Mahal.
