OVERVIEW: This is a great introduction to the landmarks, lifestyles, and dizzying diversity of northern India. It captures the color, character, and charisma of the cities and sights of the region while also offering the opportunity to monitor the tigers of Ranthambore reserve. Road travel gives us the opportunity to observe rural towns and isolated villages and compare their daily lives with the stunning temples and Maharaja’s palaces in our destinations. Old Delhi is the starting point for exploration, as it overwhelms the senses with its diverse cultural legacy and innumerable artifacts from its turbulent past. From there, travelers travel to Agra to see the Red Fort and the Taj Mahal, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. By way of Udaipur, which lives up to its name as the “romance of Rajasthan,” we visit Bundi’s summer palace and the ornate Queen’s Stepwell, as well as the eerily deserted Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri. The waters of Lake Pichola reflect the elegant façades of the palaces and temples. Jaipur, the royal Pink City, combines 18th-century palaces with swarms of vibrant spice vendors, while Jodhpur, in the bleak Thar Desert, is home to the massive Mehrangarh Fort, which rises above the blue-painted houses and tiered pathways at its base.
